Icons of the Library
Third Edition
Samantha Wright
18 October, 2010
It's been two years since Library Icons 2nd Ed. came out. This is, of course, too long, but things came up as they so often do. This release includes 918 icons in three different formats (Windows, PNG, and OS X), supporting the maximum resolution of Windows (256×256) and Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 (512×512). The PNG release is also 512×512.
Usage
Gnome: The PNG distribution should be compatible with Gnome if you are willing to do the work to build an icon set. I keep meaning to do this, but I simply don't know enough about Gnome's icon usage habits to feel comfortable doing it myself. The icons cannot be provided in SVG format because they are not—and never have been—vectors. If someone can come up with good instructions or an icon package for Gnome, I'll endorse it!
Web and Elsewhere: I have no trouble at all with people using these icons in their sites and personal projects, and in fact I encourage it as long as proper credit is given. Ports of the set to smartphone OSes are cool, too. I must insist that they aren't included in any for-profit works, however, as I can't fully verify the copyright status of some of the stock images I used in their construction, and I don't want to get anyone in trouble. If you wish to modify one of the icons or create a new icon that goes with the set, please ask me beforehand, as there's a very high chance I'll be able to produce a better image for you, and if it's general-purpose enough, I'll even include it in the next batch.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and happy modding!
